"Crop Residue Biomass Rapid Composting"

   Demonstration Units

OBJECTIVES

  • To demonstrate recycling of Biowaste  at homestead level.

  • To demonstrate 250 demonstration units on rapid composting of crop residue biomass in homestead farming.

  • To provide training and awareness to farmers.

Additional recommendations by PSMC 

  • Collect baseline data from the farmers and villagers.

  • Provide GPS coordinates for geotagging.

  • Encourage incorporation /promotion of BIOTECH PRODUCTS like nutrition rich varieties of staple food, vegetables and fruits along with biofertilizers and biopesticides. 

Unit fabrication

Different types of fabrication units were tested and experimented for efficiency and efficacy. Trials were conducted for accelerated composting of waste including waste from fruit farms. Climatic conditions and possibility of climatic events were also included as important criteria for the selection of these models. Mechanical and civil engineers from the engineering division instituted and assisted in design, erection and standardization of the construction materials. The following three models were approved.

1.  Using pre-cast fiber reinforced cement walls (asbestos free)

2. Using precast ferro cement slabs

3. Concrete bricks

4. Clay bricks including plastering

Selection of the materials for fabricating the units were finalized and standardized as per the per-determined dimensions for initializing the program. It was decided to install prefabricated structures for the unit for ease of transportation, handling and replacement/servicing purposes. These structures are compatible with all forms of composting. Ramco hicem board was the finalized fabrication material. And the specifications are given below:

  • Thermal insulation - Non combustible

  • Water resistance - Not affected even after soaking in water

  • Termite resistance - Material made mostly of inorganic minerals

  • No mould growth - Made of natural minerals which are inorganic in nature hence free of mold growth

  • Manufactured using cement, cellulose fibers with performance enhancing special additives and do not contain asbestos.

  • Dimensional stability - Boards are cured under HPSE (High Pressure steam curing), which causes an irreversible matrix change providing high dimensional and chemical stability accompanied by low alkalinity.   

Construction of Biotech KISAN compost cabin using Ramco Hicem Board

Minimum size fixed for the demonstration unit is as per approved size as specified in the project sanction order (10x5x3 feet), the units so far fabricated are suitable for the following biomass composting methods  

 

  •  Windrow composting

  •  Using cow dung slurry as bacteria source

  •  Using inoculum (developed by IRTC with the support of KSCSTE) in liquid form by spraying with the support of a rocker sprayer or using inoculum mixed along with coir pith, using worms to make vermi compost in most of these units having a vermi wash collecting slots

Trials were conducted using different inoculum for testing the compost quality and were analyzed in the laboratory. Different types of windrow composting, inoculum-based composting and vermi composting were tested on available crop residues.

During the first phase majority of the farmers have started the process of generating composts with their crop residue such as grass and small shrubs removed from farms, leaf of areca nut palm, litter and debris from rubber plantations etc.

Mr. poulose from pezhumpara cluster is using the prepared compost for growing azolla
